Poppi is the work that marked the beginning of my artistic career in 2009. The idea was born in Poppi, a small town in Tuscany, Italy, and marked the moment when art stopped being simply a passion and became my way of life. Made of fiberglass, Poppi belongs to a limited edition of 500 pieces, all numbered, certified, painted, and signed by me. Although they are part of the same series, no two are exactly alike. For me, Poppi represents the beginning: the courage to take the first step and turn an intuition into an artistic universe of my own.
Poppi is not simply the first sculpture in my canine family. It is the work through which Felipao was born as an artist.
The idea emerged in Poppi, a small town in Tuscany, Italy. That place not only gave the piece its name, but ultimately marked a turning point in my life. Until then, art had been a passion, a form of expression, and a personal necessity. With Poppi, it stopped being merely a part of me and became my path.
I chose the French bulldog for its unmistakable character: compact, expressive, and approachable, with a personality capable of transforming any space. I have always been interested in that duality between strength and tenderness, between a strong presence and an affectionate nature. Poppi brought together everything I was looking for in order to create a character with an identity of its own.
Its figure became a kind of three-dimensional canvas on which I could experiment with color, finishes, and my own Pop language. I wanted each sculpture to convey joy, optimism, and character, while also preserving the distinctive trace of something made by hand.
Poppi is part of a limited edition of 500 pieces, all numbered, certified, painted, and signed by me. Although they belong to the same edition, no two are alike. Each color combination and every hand-finished intervention makes each Poppi a unique work. It is made of fiberglass, weighs approximately 7 kilograms, and measures 50 centimeters long, 25 centimeters wide, and 35 centimeters high.
For me, Poppi represents the faithful companion: that presence that brings joy, fills a space with life, and eventually becomes part of the identity of a home. But it also symbolizes something more personal: the courage to step into the unknown and turn a vocation into a way of life.
Other sculptures, characters, and stories followed. The canine family continued to grow, but they all retained something of that first work: the color, the personality, and the desire to make art feel close, accessible, and emotional.
Because every universe has an origin.
And mine began in Poppi, with Poppi.
