Speedy was born from the turtle as a symbol of wisdom, longevity, and good luck. After the experience of the coronavirus, I also wanted to turn it into a reflection on the importance of moving forward more calmly, recognizing what is essential, and learning to live in a more conscious way. Its polyhedral shell and forward-moving posture, looking toward the future, represent perseverance, resilience, and a different idea of progress: not arriving sooner, but arriving better.
Speedy was born from a figure that has always fascinated me: the turtle. In Chinese culture, it is one of the great mythological animals and symbolizes wisdom, protection, and longevity. According to legend, the mythical emperor Fuxi discovered on the shell of a sacred turtle the first signs that helped interpret the order of the world. Since then, the turtle has been associated with intuition, reflection, and good fortune.
I have always been drawn to the idea of an animal that does not need speed in order to move forward, because its strength lies elsewhere: in constancy, resilience, and the intelligence of time.
Speedy also emerged from a very personal reflection after the experience of the coronavirus. Like so many others, that period forced me to stop and look at life from a different perspective. Suddenly, we found ourselves trapped in an unfamiliar reality, deprived of movement, contact, and certainty. Yet in the midst of that forced pause, something revealing also emerged: the possibility of distinguishing between what is essential and what is secondary.
We learned — or at least had the opportunity to learn — to move more slowly. To value shared time, conversation, waiting, and the small rituals of everyday life. To understand that not everything urgent is important, and that we often live too fast to listen to what truly matters.
That is why I wanted Speedy to be much more than a turtle. For me, it represents this new awareness: moving forward calmly, but with direction. Its body in motion, looking upward, speaks precisely of that. It is not a static figure, but a presence that continues forward with measured steps, guided by reflection and by a wiser idea of progress.
Its polyhedral shell introduces a contemporary language into an ancestral symbol. That geometry projects the work into the future, as if everything we have learned in recent years could be transformed into a new way of living: more flexible, more human, and more conscious of our fragility.
There is also something deeply inspiring about the turtle. Only a small number of sea turtles reach adulthood. From the very beginning, their existence is a silent struggle against everything. That is why, for me, they are also a symbol of perseverance, calm, and the ability to keep moving forward even in the most difficult conditions.
Speedy embodies that balance between slowness and determination. It reminds us that moving forward does not always mean rushing, and that sometimes true strength lies in staying the course without losing one’s center.
Perhaps that is why this work also has a deeply personal resonance for me: my grandfather collected turtles. And I am sure that was no coincidence.
With Speedy, I wanted to pay tribute to that quiet wisdom that knows how to wait, endure, and keep moving forward.
Because sometimes the greatest success is not in arriving sooner, but in arriving better.
