Tradition and Innovation: A Tribute to Madrid’s Century-Old Businesses

Today, I have had the honour of taking part in the Community of Madrid’s tribute to 150 century-old businesses across the region, held at the Real Casa de Correos in Puerta del Sol.

For the occasion, my Meninas were chosen as a recognition of businesses that have been part of Madrid’s history for more than a hundred years. Each of the establishments honoured received a piece inspired by the colours of Spain and Madrid, symbolising their history, dedication and ability to evolve without losing their essence.

For me, it is particularly meaningful that my work should represent this connection between tradition and innovation. These are two ideas that are also central to the way I understand art: looking to our history and cultural references while always approaching them through a contemporary language.

During the event, the President of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, also announced a new Small Business Revitalisation Plan, with measures aimed at supporting the modernisation, innovation and digitalisation of these businesses, with particular attention given to those with the longest history.

I am proud that my Meninas have become part of this recognition of the businesses and families that, generation after generation, have helped shape Madrid’s commercial and cultural identity.
